Author Visit to St Kevin's Dee Why 24th October 2012

I prefer to teach when I visit schools. At St Kevin’s I sat with 65 fantastic students from Years 3 through to 6 as the Guest of Teacher Librarian, Kirsty O’Rourke to talk about “Tricks to Good Writing” and “How to Make a Picture Book”. My props were a few of my favourite PBs: Francis Watts & David Legge’s Kisses for Daddy, Meredith Costain & Pamela Allen’s Doodledum Dancing, Jackie French & Bruce Whatley’s Diary of a Wombat, Jane Tanner’s Love from Grandma and my friend and mentor, Susanne Gervay & Anna Pignataro’s Ships in the Field.

We started with these gorgeously produced books and looked at aspects of a PB’s creation before I showed students the script, the preliminary book design, rough character sketches for style approval, and some coloured roughs for the first few pages of my own PB to be launched in 2013, In My Tree House. My illustrator is Michele Gaudion who has illustrated for authors such as Wendy Blaxland, Paul Collins, Sally Odgers, Goldie Alexander and others. St Kevin’s has invited me back next year when the book is released so that we can compare the finished product to its early stages of development.

A nice touch to the visit was that Years 5 and 6 are reading my novel, DemiChat and the Kent Street Mystery. They had so many questions for me that we couldn’t get through them all before the bell rang!

My Author visits can be organised through the Syba Signs Speakers Network who can provide a list of lessons I deliver (tied to the outcomes of the National Curriculum from K to 6). Contact: jodie@sybasigns.com.au
